The maiden run of the first historic ALn668 railcar powered by Liquefied Biomethane (BioLNG) departed from Ancona, culminating in its official presentation at the Fabriano (AN) Locomotive Depot.
This initiative, which coincided with the 130th anniversary of the Subappennina Italica railway, represents a pioneering achievement at the European level and marks the beginning of a new era for sustainable rail transport.
The project, promoted by Fondazione FS Italiane, Snam, and Hitachi Rail, saw Ecomotive Solutions play a key role in the development of the innovative power supply system. The historic ALn668, now fully refurbished, is officially operational and certified to operate on the national railway network, delivering performance that combines efficiency with environmental responsibility.
Powered by BioLNG, a renewable biofuel, the train enables a reduction in CO₂ emissions of over 80% and, under certain conditions, can even achieve a “carbon-negative” footprint. Emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulfur, and particulate matter are almost zero, making this technology a replicable model for the future of rail transport.
As the system integrator, Ecomotive Solutions worked closely with the Hitachi Rail team to design and implement the entire onboard power supply system. A virtuous example of how innovation can enhance existing rail infrastructure and contribute tangibly to the sector's decarbonization.
